If this fails, for example because your printer is too new for the database in your version of Linux Mint or Ubuntu, then proceed with step 3: 3. Installing the driver manually isn't very difficult either, because Brother has issued a generic install script for that: the Driver Install Tool.

With that, you can install not only the printer driver, but also for a multifunctional printer the scanner driver. You can use it as follows: a.

Last edited by rlynwood; at PM. Printer drivers are not kernel-space drivers. They're user-space drivers filters and a PPD configuration file that CUPS uses to process a given print job via various filters in a chain and generate the printer-specific output. They're reasonably easy to install with your distro's package manager, and you should be able to use your favourite desktop scanning application after that.

If you get stuck, post again. I've owned several Brother multi-function devices, and they've all been easy to get working in a Linux environment. Most Postscript-capable printers can be handled natively for example. Some require proprietary drivers from the vendor. I'm sure others will chime in with their preferences and reasons for those.

There are many ways to connect printers, from direct connections with a USB cable to over the network. For some types of connections, your printer may be automatically detected and configured. For others, you may need to do this on your own. Ubuntu and many other Linux distributions use a printer configuration developed by Red Hat. Other printer configuration tools work fairly similar, as they all use CUPS on the backend.

Launch the printer configuration tool on your Linux desktop and start adding a printer. This tool will provide you with a list of printer drivers available in the foomatic database. Select the manufacturer of your printer and look for its model number in the list. Look for the closest model number and try it. The printer configuration tool also allows you to provide a PPD file directly. Some manufacturers provide these files for their printers.

You can also consider downloading the Windows driver and attempt to open it in a file-extraction program. If you have a PPD file, you can install it from the printer configuration interface. The OpenPrinting.

The printer configuration tool can actually search for and download PPD files directly from there. However, you can also just visit the printer database on the OpenPrinting. The database will tell you how well a printer works, recommend a driver, and provide PPD files. For some printers, you may be pointed towards special drivers provided by the manufacturer. The database of PPD files provided by foomatic is designed to make them work as easily as possible, and the OpenPrinting.

Some printers may work, but not very well. If you want to use a printer with Linux, you should go out of your way to look for one that supports Linux. You could also just do an end-run around the whole printer situation — for example, if you get a printer that supports Google Cloud Print, you could just print to it from Linux via Google Cloud Printavoiding any printer driver problems.

Having problems printing? Consider going paperless. You can always print documents to PDF and keep them in digital form — or just take those PDFs to another computer with a printer and print them there.

Hi there, How do I setup a wifi printer on Mint? I installed the driver, but I don't know how to link it up to the router, I did a network printer search and I input the router SSID but can't find anything, any idea? How did you input the router SSID? Does the manual have instructions on how to connect wifi without using windows? If the printer has a wired ethernet port and can be configured via a web browser then enter the wifi settings and enable it.

I would use a static IP address. Once unplugged the printer should automatically switch from wired to wireless.

Then use the printer utility or cups web interface to setup the printer. It is the Brother-MFC-JDW, it is quite confusing that there are 2 system settings on Mint, showing similar things, there are 2 printer setup menu, one is simplify version the other comes with more detail, just like the default Ubuntu shell and the Gnome one.

I have not read through the network users guide to see if it is possible to assign a static IP address via the control panel. I finally found the cause of the problem, it was a missing ia32 lib, the driver was written for 32bit but I am installing on 64bit, although I use command line for forced installation on 64bit and it worked before, I overlook and forgot I need the additional lib to work with. The printer configuration tool in Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon allows you to add and remove printers, but does not allow configuring the printer or print driver in any way.

There's a simple solution however:. This will open a configuration utility that allows you to select printer drivers and otherwise configure your printer. If the utility is not installed it was by default for meyou need to install the package system-config-printer-gnome. However I find the configuration utility easier to use. Newbs have no idea what to put there. We need to get some kind of instruction up to cover that kind of thing. I'm back off to Version 13 of mint again.

Didn't have to do anything except click search for my network printer and everything configured itself. Did the developers from microsoft "help" make Version 17? It would be nice if there was a link included in the Desktop allowing the user to configure their printer s from the get go. Linux Mint. My Places Sign in.
